Here's a picture of the boat I bought. I screwed up when I bought the boat without checking out the motor. I took her word when she told me that the motor was good. Wrong took the boat to a boat shop to have it serviced before I tried to use it. Mechanic called and told me the motor was seized up. Not worth fixing as the labor costs would be more than the motor would be worth.
Sent the seller a message saying she owed me a refund of $500 since she lied about the motor. Doubt that will happen.

Hey Ed, why only $ 500.00? New motor is going to run way more than that.
What about just taking the boat back to her?

How long has the motor been setting. Take plugs out put some thin cutting oil in each cylinder and let it set for a few days. Then with the plugs out put the motor in gear an try to turn the prop. It may work loose đ¤

Sorry to hear that Ed. First rule of buying a used boat is hearing it run. Good luck buddy.

dbed, I'm sorry for the disappointment. It looks like a very nice boat otherwise. There might be some broken up boat out there that has a working motor. I know new motors are very expensive. My repair on my old Johnson was a little more than $4000, but a new equivalent motor starts at$12000 so that justified the repair.

Agreed. Why only $500. Just priced a new 75hp Mercury for my boat, 11 grand installed. Simple test prior to buying a used boat, disconnect the fuel line to the motor and turn the ignition switch to the start position. Motor should turn over but not start. Better yet, bring a motor flushing cup, hook up a hose and attempt to start the motor. If the motor is seized like your mechanic says, the boat has probably sat for quite awhile. This can also lead to problems with the boatâs gas tank and fuel system.Condensation and internal rust in the fuel tank. If you do decide to re power your boat make sure that your mechanic checks the integrity of your fuel system. Hope everything works out for u! Remember that old saying⌠the two best days in a boat ownerâs life is the day he buys it and the day he sells it!!!

Personally I would attempt to cancel the sale and return the boat to her requesting a full refund!

I only paid $2000 for the boat trailer and the motor so I thought $ 500 would be fair. I researched prices and the boat run 2 to 5000 and the trailer around 1000 so I thought the motor was a bonus. A new motor costs 16000$ so that is out of the question. When I find a used motor I will insist it be set up so I can see and hear it run.

Sounds like a good plan Ed. There's usually a fair amount of used motors out there. Good luck.

I know I shouldn't have suckered up when she didn't have a battery with it. I should have went and got a battery so I could have started it. When it wouldn't have turned over I would have given her the choice off lowering the price or keeping it. I was 31/2 hrs from home and we liked the boat
Another thing to consider when re powering your boat. When upgrading to a four stroke motor, take into consideration that a four stroke motor weighs nearly double what an older two stroke motor weighs. Make sure that your boatâs transom weight limit can handle the weight of a newer four stroke motor!

Hopefully you can get the partial refund, and put it towards a motor.
When I shop for used vehicles of any type, I try and make arrangements to run/drive/inspect them before showing up. In the case of boats, I usually bring a toolbox, compression tester, set of earmuffs, and a battery and jumper cables.

The 2K sounds like you made out well Ed on just the boat alone. I am not a used anything kind of guy especially when it comes to motors. That warranty thing is what I am always looking at.
However if you can get a used motor for 3 or 4 K and have it checked over by a mechanic before purchasing, you will have made a good investment. Best of luck to you with the boat.
My motor I bought last year, a 40 Tohatsu, installed was 6700 American dollars. Brand new 4 stroke motor.
Also beware when buying a used motor that you donât settle for just a tank test. You canât go âwide open throttleâ on a tank test. It may idle just fine or possibly run fine at 2500rpm but Boggs at 6000rpm or even a bad vibration because something is tweaked. Been there, done that. Had to rebuild the motor myself. So keep that in mind, when the seller canât (wonât) put it in a lake or riverâŚđon
