went down to denton, md on the choptank....target..the blue cat...armed with my ugly stick catfish special spooled 30# ande with a 50# leader sante cooper rig...also had and threw a penn fiece setup for sh#ts and giggles....an hour before slack tide...and then WHAM.....thought i had him...the fierce rig hit hard but then the ancient mariner catfish special started to talk......and did he yell....as i am new to bit casters, i kept playing with the drag....mistake 1.....so excited, i never kept the tip up to tire that monster...mistake 2...kept him from going deep and snagging, i managed to suface him.....a 40 inch at least striper.....on gizzaed shad for cripes sake....the fight for maybe 20 min was on..my net was in the truck and i could not get to my gripper....stupid...mistake 3......cripes Saw....i might have a record....we fought and got her to the bulkhead and thought tired enough as was i....it drew a crowd of others fishing and those just enjoying a wonderful warm feburary afternoon.......at 67 yrs old, i can't bend like the ol days and as i tried to grab that monster, she snaped 50#s of leader....LOST......you wait your entire life for a shot like that and you just can't screw it up like just did today...but hey, it was fun and that is the main thing .....right?.....another day.....but ...just...DAMN........
Well glad you had fun. Sorry for your loss. LOL
Bet you don't make those mistakes again!
I absolutely hate it when that happens, but hey, you had one fun ride!
An entertaining learning experience, for sure!
had that happen more than once....because I wasn't ready. fishing is relaxing, but you always have to be ready or you miss that once in a lifetime shot.

jerseyboy : Excellent fishing story, unlike many I've heard, the unvarnished truth. You are to be commended for your honesty. Now.....get your gear ready for next time, and give it another shot.

My dad always said 'plan for the worst, but prepare for the best'. He was usually talking about fishing when he said that. I have updated that saying to 'its better to have and not need it than to need it and not have it'.
Look at it this way. He will be twice as big in six months as the story gets repeated.
Same here. Was in the line waiting for the ferry. Had time for one cast. Hooked a cow striper. Got her to the sea wall, gaff was in the van. Drug her back to the van and got the back door open. Got the gaff and extended it, all one handed while holding the pole. Then she rolled and I watched the line slide up her back and catch on the jig. Yep, pulled the hook 😒. She had to have been close to 48”. 🤷♂️. Still, nice memories

… especially at this low cost! 🤣
Sounds like us this fall when we started Tog fishing. Started out with 30lb leader, got broken off WAY too damn many times. So we upgraded to 50 and still got broke off, M lost a really big Tog right at the boat. Now we're using 80lb and not losing nearly as many. Live and learn.
i had a similar incident on the Patuxent long ago in early spring, just south of the Route 4 bridge. Me in a buddy were in my Jon Boat about 1/2 mile below the bridge looking for cats or anything that would bite using cut bait. Bam, something hit my Rino rod and it was off to the races. it was a big rockfish. just as i got it to the boat to pick it out of the water, the rod broke just above the handle. i was disappointed but it sure was fun.
