Well our boat rental plans bombed, so chose to spend an hour on a pier looking for what is different from last week.
Last week:
Water level lowest I've seen in 15-years.
Through clear water to about 15', nothing looked attractive at all.
Skunked.
Crappy trout fishing as the scheduled plant could not occur.
Today:
Water level about full with active inflow.
Still didn't note any signs of shallow water beds.
Fishing my old school marabou jig & pig and my son on several drop-shotted RoboWorms, got 2 in a pretty short period all in something like 15-20' of water.
More bottom grass than about the none of last week.
By observation, trout seemed to be non-existent still; though a February 28 plant date was posted.
Thinking about renting a boat tomorrow.
It is close to "time."

No skunk Sawheeler!! Nice fish!
Hi Stephen.
I would like to learn more about boat rentals, something I have never done yet.
Would you please advise?
Thanks for the detailed report.

Roge,
I will do my best to get back to you tonight.
Got one more today from same spot.
This one on a 3/8 oz black marabou jig with an Uncle Josh black & blue Big Daddy pork frog.
In 35' of water.
Doesn't seem they are in shallow quite yet.
Saw a few juvenile males in shallow kinda trying to establish some dominance.
No discernible established beds seen.

Roge,
Can you provide a little detail of where & what you are looking for?
I ask this as I'm in San Diego North County and your postings show Cloverdale.
I can generally speak to and provides links to our SD County waters and their boats.
Having renting quite a few, before I got too old to climb in, sit on a bench for some hours and then crawl out at day's end; I can comment on hull types, gas v. electric trolling motors and likely some other things to look for or avoid.
If you are in NorCal, provide me the names of a few water bodies and I can probably find you some guidance.
Get me started and I will run.
Stephen
Can I call you Roger?
And don't forget the pictures.
Hi guys, thanks for replying back.
Yes, you can call me Roger.
I live in Cloverdale, and I am near the Sonoma Lake.
I have never had a boat before.
I started fishing not long ago, basically for trout or on the surf.
I’d like to learn more about the idea of renting a boat, perhaps thinking of buying one in the future.
I have also tried a little bit of pier fishing with little success, though.
Any piece of advice is really appreciated.
Tight lines!
This pic is in Blue Lakes
Roger,
Does this help at all?
https://www.lakesonoma.com/rentals/fishing/These guys seem to have a pretty fair selection of boats that are fishable; more than I've seen on most waters.
Things to think about:
How mobile (i.e. old or disabled) is your party.
How much money you got.
I've been satisfied fishing from pontoon boats in the past as they can be the most easy to move around in and generally stay comfortable.
Got any other water bodies within range?
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for the photo.
It is the sustenance of many/most Stagers.
