Actually for home defense, either a 16 Gauge or 12 Gauge Pump with #4 shot.
BTW I had a problem when they were talking about the Slugs.
The gauge of the shotgun is how many slugs or weight of the shot, you can get from a pound of lead.
So 16 Gauge, 1 Oz slug 16 times. 12 Gauge 1 and 1/4 Oz per or 12 rounds.
#4 shot is almost .177 in size for each pellet. A pump is much better than a double barrel shotgun.
No, I don't have one at this time. LOL
In High School I did a lot of hunting with a 16 Gauge in central Arizona.
Jack Rabbits with #4 shot, and Dove and Quail with #8 shot. All with a "Single Shot" gun.
I did shoot "Doubles" on Birds, either by running the shot pattern (Ring) over both or firing with my Left hand over the receiver with the second shell in my hand and then breaking the gun open and shuttling the second shell in as I moved the barrel for the second bird.

The 410 is the best gun for snakes there is.
BTW IF your are "Excited" you can work a Pump as fast as an Auto. LOL

I was walking down a "Cow Trail" with brush on my left and 1 inch dead grass on my right.
A rattlesnake went off next to my left side and when I landed to the right after going airborne, the .22 Remington Field master (.22 pump with 22 .22 shorts in the tube) was going "Click, Click, Click"! I have no idea if I hit the snake, but I bet I scared it as much as he did me. LOL
I looked around the ground and picked up 5 rounds that I had not even fired! Reloaded the rifle and went on hunting Jack Rabbits. I was still in HS at that time.

Back when I was shooting clay targets a friend got me into shooting skeet. As I recall there are 8 stations for skeet in the shape of a D. 4 of those you shoot 2 single targets and 1 set of doubles. There was a high house and a low house, the high one's target came out about 10 feet off the ground and was at one end of the D. The low one's target came out about 3 feet off the ground and was at the opposite end of the D. I was shooting my .410 pump and people were looking around the fences dividing the fields wondering who was shooting doubles so fast. Turns out I was shooting my pump gun faster than others would shoot their semi autos and over/unders.

I believe you. LOL BTW White Wing Doves are a real trip to shoot. They can reach 60 miles an hour flying 3-4 feet off the ground. I don't know how fast a clay target can go.

I shot them because my mother loved them. There was not that much meat on them. Quail were good, but you always missed shooting the first covey. LOL The noise of them taking off always made me jump with the first covey.
The second though, I always got one.

I remember pheasant hunting when I was about 13 years old with my brother when this big rooster burst out of a snow drift at my feet. My brother said it looked like my first shot was in self defense, from the hip, but my follow up shot nailed him. Made for a great dinner that evening. By the way it was an Ithaca 12 gauge pump gun.
