Nice catch. Most photos I see of drum have what look like loose scales. Do the scales come out of drum easy or do they just have mutent scales? I have never caught a drum. Thanks in advance for a reply.

Sandfleas and shrimp. Put the shrimp on first, then the sandflea to help it last a little bit.

Their scales are like armour plating. They're big and they don't come off easy. If their scales are off, it's because they fought hard and ran into structure of some sort. They're another fish that WILL put your tackle to the test. Never high stick a Black drum, Tog or Sheepshead, it'll make one final run and you'll be left with shards of what used to be a fishing rod. Learned that lesson the hard way, lol.

Thanks for the photo. I have now seen one that looks great. Nice fish. Looking back at the original posted photo, I believe what I am seeing is slime or foam. I guess that is common. Given the description of their fight, why do they not have a higher status? Aren't they in the same family as red fish, which I have caught. So many writings through the years refer to them with little respect or even disrespect. Again I am just going by what I have read and seen on TV. I have never seen one or caught one. Are they like pike, (One of my favorite fish) that some people dislike because they are line cutters, not the target fish or are slime protected. Once again, great catch. I would be proud of that fish.

They are quite slimy. We like them, the larger ones tend to be wormy so anything above 24" gets released. they're MUCH better than a Redfish in my opinion. They are line cutters if you can't winch them off pilings or other structure, oysters will make a mess of your line in VERY short order. M is happy as hell with her catch. I got one last year in The OBX that was over 24". I hooked it on the smallest damn rig we took so it took me 10 minutes to land. They're like hooking onto the back of a bus, they don't give up quickly.
