The Bus and I decided to test the water at Lake Berryessa. A little early for us but the urge to wet a line after a couple of months without fishing said "GO!" My expectations matched my skill level at catching cold weather bass, petty low. But my man George took me to school and showed me how to locate them, and how to finesse fish for them. Result? Best day of cold water fishing in my life! We caught over 20 bass (trifecta: spots, smallies, largies) and lost 3-5 at the boat. We both caught a 5 lb smallie! Best 5? 21 to 22 lbs! Beautiful day fishing with a great friend! First trip of 2024 and retirement bodes well for fishing the rest of the year!

Thanks BC! It was a special day!
Shame on me for failing to mention that zero boat traffic, bald eagles, deer, and wild turkey sightings only made the day even more fantastic!
Beer batter smallies!! Yummy

We actually dropped 5 off with a close friend of George's. He was so excited! Note to all C & R fanatics: please don't waste anyone's time with your rhetoric on this post. It was the first time we harvested any bass in the last year and a half and it was a legal catch.

Sounds like the trip of the year Steve, and George is a cold water Master. I just hope the rest of your season lives up to this one. Congratulations on your retirement, and the great catching you guys did.

Thank you Fred! Retirement for sure is off to a great start! A little scary living off a fixed income but mind, body, and soul said, "it's time!"

You'll be fine buddy. Don't forget the first rule of retirement, EVERY day is Saturday! How's your knee doing?
Took a long time to get here but it feels great. As I was climbing all around the boat I'm sure George got tired of hearing me comment what a miracle it is to be pain free! Lol

Sounds like you're ready Steve.
That must have been a blast. They know how to stretch a line and some fine eating.

Yes Mike... a phenomenal start for 2024. I'm still smiling from the fight that 5lb smallie gave me.
