Pull Up Your Pants, Ancil!

I played football during my sophomore and junior years in high school. In a game with Bowie, Texas high school, a much larger school, but not nearly as big as the team sent down to play us from Wichita Falls. Their team was transported to us in two trailway buses! With Wichita Falls, it seemed like they were sending in fresh players every down!

With Bowie, we had a slim chance of winning, but it was good experience since we were more closely matched.
On one play, I was right tackle and Tom Harris was right guard. Our half back, Ancil Thurman happened to break free and was running for a touchdown with no one left to tackle him.

Unfortunately, as his bowlegs were churning like an eggbeater, his pants began to slip down and he was trying to continue to run, hold up his pants and carry the ball, all together. Of course, he slowed down and was caught and tackled by the Bowie players.

Both Tom and I were lying on the ground and doubled up laughing, it was such a comical event. His bare butt shining for all to see was worth the score.

In another comedy of errors, we were playing Whitesboro and their men’s guest dressing room was out of order. We were required to dress on the auditorium’s stage.

After the game, we had to take off our uniforms and then streak across the gym floor to the girl’s dressing room to shower.

Unbeknown to us, our band and cheerleaders’ buses were parked just outside the open windows of this gym. So here we are running back and forth across the gym floor, naked as jaybirds!

In one bus, the cheerleaders were aghast. Linda said “would you look at that? I cannot believe my eyes!” Orene said, “Well, don’t look!” to which Linda replied, “I cannot help looking!” Just Sayin…RJS

Another great story RJ.

I remember Wichita Falls had some really great teams in the 50 and 60's, winning multiple TX State championships.

Your story made me recall a football game I played in Jr High that was played against a brand new school.
Well it rained all week before the game and then we traveled on the bus to the game in our white pants and white. jerseys as the visiting team.

On the opening kickoff my buddy and I were lined up and soon after the kick running down the field chasing after the ball that was bouncing around from player to player, each one of us diving try to grab the ball but it was too slick with water and mud to grab. Finally we recovered around the 5 yard line and every player on both sides were covered in mud from head to toe, after just the very first play of the game.

To top it off the new school field was built over a former pig farm.
Let's just say it was a long game and long smelly ride home after that sloppy kickoff.
