Ny preacher let go with a hell fire and damnation sermon on fishing on Sunday. He said " you know whats going to happen to those who fish on Sunday? They are going to be buried in their tackle box on the river bank! I caught him in the barber shop a few days after that getting a hair cut. I spoke to him and then asked him if he was not a Fisher of Men and followed up with "And you do that on Sunday don't you? He said yes I do. Do you know what is going to happen you when you die? he responded "What"? I said they are going to give you an enema and bury you in a shoebox! He turned red faced but he had a great sense of humor, which came in handy with a barbershop full of people. He was a great man and a wonderful Methodist minister. I don't think he preached on fishing on Sunday after that.

When I was a boy I lived in Livingston, Montana. In the summertime the local priest used to drive to Gardner too say mass early Sunday mornings. A 56 mile drive up the Yellowstone River. One Sunday he was a half hour late for mass. People were afraid something terrible had happened. Finally he showed up. Everyone knew what had happened. He said mass in his hip boots. He had tied into a big one and it took him a long time to land it. After mass he showed everyone his catch. 10+ lb. rainbow.

Some don't think fisherpeople might mention GOD to each other

Where 2 or more are gathered in my name, does that mean brought up in the conversation.

Seen a lot of mention of GOD and several AMENS on this board.

Without GOD there would be no US or fish.

I was lucky to have a minister that took me fishing when I was a kid, also give him credit for meeting my wife of over 40 years.

He did give Sunday to the Lord.

Most of us who fish are close to nature. I don't think a person can be close to nature without being aware of our Creator. His handiwork is evident throughout. So as Tiny Tim said," God bless us, EVERYONE"

I have been fishing bass tournaments for more than 40 years, plus fishing since I was about 10. 68 now. Missed a lot of Sundays fishing or traveling. I try not to fish on Sunday, except after church. With the internet handy, any sermon I miss is available to watch, and more. Hard to tell what God would think, some of the disciples were fishermen. Our relationship with God is personal. Church is an opportunity to gather with others. There is, or was, a Bass Circuit in California called Fishers of Men. Just some thoughts to share with fellow fishermen, I assume are Christians. Keep a tight line and God Bless all in this conversation.

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy... The Sabbath is the Seventh day of the week. Look at any calendar or ask a Jew which day is the Sabbath and then go fishing on Sunday the day chosen by MAN not the one chosen by the Biblical God. The Sabbath is Saturday.

All that said, if you are not Jewish you are not held by that or any of the other many restrictions laid down for the Jewish people like the prohibition of eating of pigs, catfish, shrimp, etc. As far as the Preacher he needs to read his Bible and remember, "Judge not lest you be judged." It is not his place to judge you. He, if he practices his faith should be forgiving and offer love rather than try to use his position to create fear of a Loving God, to line his pockets, and raise himself up.

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy... The Sabba... (show quote)

I was raised Baptist and so far no one has ever been able to demonstrate to me why the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday. or how it was ordained. Christ said that he didn't come to change anything but only to fulfill what was written. He was restring in his tomb on the Sabbath, and on Sunday he was up and about his work. "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy" I may be wrong but fishing is restful and holy to me and I can fish and talk with the Lord one on one out there

Only by way of explanation do I ring in on this. If my memory of the teaching serves me right way far back in history when the Catholic Church was the authority for Christianity the holy day was changed from Saturday to Sunday mostly in commemoration of the Ressurection and partially to separate Christianity from Jusaism. In most cases after the Reformation most groups did not seem to deem it necessary to change back and Sunday stuck. I do not argue the point one way or another nor do I feel it is of importance in the grand scheme of things. We should each set aside a day for worship, rest and prayer. If that happens during fishing time great, if not, it would seem to me to be an individual choice as to which tradition a person follows. It is not something Christians should allow themselves to be divided over. There is way too much of that and as it continues the world continues to fall apart while we fight among ourselves over petty differences. Love God above all, love neighbor as yourself. PERIOD.

When I was about 8 my stepfather took my brother, sister and I to a different church each Sunday. In a couple of these establishments the offering was collected as almost the last agenda item. In 2, the offering plate was passed every time anyone entered after the service was started.
Then in the 60's and 70's the televangelists were sending the message "send me your money and you will be saved!" Somewhere around this time (I think it was Oral Roberts) one of the televangelists said on TV that he needed 8 million dollars by a specific date or "God is going to call me home!"
Due to these events my opinion is that organized religion is more about money than it is about the word of God.
IMO calling a man made structure the house of God is somewhat blasphemous. Go out into the house that God built and study His word and/or pray to Him. Then make your donation to a charitable organization that is helping the truly needy in this world.

As a devout Pagan, to me , Nature is God. Mankind is only a small part of the larger picture and has no greater worth than a fish, a tree, a river or stream. All that is natural is Godly. Tight lines and thank fish๐Ÿ„๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŽฃ
