Paying Respect to our F**g

Robert J Samples Loc: Round Rock, Texas

I am uncertain as to the date of this incident, but it happened within the last ten years. It happened at Texas A.&M. They were playing Retreat and lowering the f**g. Now, ordinarily this would not have been anything unusual. TO THE COLORS has been practiced around the world, by the United States and other countries since the Crusades!

But on this day, there were some non-reg students in the area close to the f**gpole. Why these people were near the f**gpole was never disclosed. It was never clear whether they were students of the University.

These students were harassing the cadets and making ‘sport’ of their job, and even attempting to interfere with the cadets’ job, which the cadets took seriously and who did not know how to handle this unusual bit from other students who were not in the Corps.

After all, who doesn’t respect and honor Old Glory and what our f**g stands for. It was both a surprise and a shock!

This college campus regularly graduates more officers for all military services than the U.S. Air Force, same as the U.S. Navy, and behind only West Point! It is known as the West Point of Texas.

This incident was a complete surprise that there were students who would disrespect the f**g of the United States! The next day and from then on, there would be an entire company or squadron of cadets in attendance. I do not know what discipline was meted out to those ‘beatnik’ students.

It was quite a shock, there was no doubt this was completely counter to all that the University or majority of students would or could accept.

If you are from another state, you might not realize that this university was sincerely dev**ed to keeping things status quo. When I was a fish (freshman) there was an uproar, and almost a r*******n over fish who were Air Force cadets and who were issued raincoats instead of ponchos. Raincoats were a sophomore privilege. The military did this because they ran out of ponchos.

Finally, the commandant, a U.S. Army officer issued the order that this uprising had to stop, or all the sophomores involved would be ‘kicked’ out! Finally, the uprising was quelled, but you get the idea. Breaking any tradition dies hard.

Several years before I retired, Jean and I chose to go to Thailand to spend Christmas holidays with a friend who we had known at our church but was now a missionary working in Thailand. We were there to help give out tracts, Bibles, and CD disks on how to start a church to the many Chinese visitors who were vacationing in Thailand. We even memorized enough Mandrin to do this job.

When we were leaving, we were in a cab going to the airport. The driver was on an expressway and suddenly, stopped the cab, got out, and stood at attention for about five minutes and then got back in the cab. I asked him what that was all about. He said we do this to honor the king! I suppose Ules Brenner would be pleased. Just Sayin...RJS

In the early 2000s I was stationed at the Denton office of the TxDPS. It was early morning, I was in my office and the Sergeant stepped in and asked me to help him raise the f**gs because there was no one in the office but us. Of course he was dressed in the full uniform of DPS including a Sliver Belly, but since I was in investigation, I was wearing starched blue jeans, long sleeve shirt with badge, gun and a brown Stetson. Both of us were well over six foot. As it happened there was a large line of people waiting for the Driver License office to open. We went out the side door and around to the front. We first raised the U.S. f**g, stepped over and raised the Texas f**g, stepped back two steps, both of us snapping a salute like we had done it a thousand times. We gather the f**g box and retreated back inside. I was amazed as we were walking away at the ''Uhs and Ahs". One woman even said loudly, "Did you see that!" It was probably one of my most proud moments and it was something that just happened by chance. I am sure that this will be one of my most cherished memories.
