The Sporting Goods manager at the Academy Outlet in Katy, Texas had been advertising for a sporting goods salesman in the local papers and about to pull his hair out. There was a group of applicants, but none had any experience, or came up to the level of ability that he desired. Few did have a little experience but not up to an adequate level.

Finally, and since the manager was desperate, he decided to take a chance on a young applicant who just applied. Since he especially needed a salesman to work beginning on Friday and over the weekend, he gave in and hired a young man who had just applied.

The very first customer who came in, the salesman went to work. He sold him two expensive Japanese fishing reels filled with a more expensive braided line, two top of the line rods, an extra large tackle box, three dozen assorted fishing lures, then they went out in the lot and the salesman sold him an 18 foot boat, 150 horsepower Outboard, and since his car was inadequate to pull this large boat, he sold the client on buying a new Chevrolet Suburban to pull his rig, which the Academy crew was rigging up.

The total sales were $131,225 and was the top sale for the Academy that day, in fact for the weekend! The manager was certainly excited and questioned the young salesman how he managed to do such a super job on his first day, and what had the customer come in buy?
The young man said, “Well, he came in for a box of Tampax” and I said, “Well, looks like your weekend is shot!” “Why don’t you go fishing?” Just Sayin… RJS
