Nope ! Probably because in our minds, either realisti-cally or psychologically, they're often the biggest we've ever hooked, which loss is left indelibly engraved in our minds/
psyches ! You seldom remember your average catches, unless you hooked into a school which led to some near non-stop action or land a 3-lb. brown, 18-in. rainbow or 16-in. brookie) !
Fishing a small lake just under 500 acres, but deep, around 89 ft. Fishing from a 18 ft. pontoon by myself in about 45 ft. depth. Trolling with a colorful deep diving repala lure, when it felt as if I'd snagged solid. Pole bent almost to breaking point as drag on reel spun out line. Pontoon motor off and trying to gain some line on reel. But I was being dragged by whatever was on my line. After 10 minutes of trying to get a look of the monster, my line went limp. Reeled in to find repala lure only had it's diving bell with eyelet, wire cable that went through the body of lure attaching hooks, which where both gone. Have caught some 25 lbs. pike and some 30 lbs. lake trout, but this fish whatever got me wondering !
Mine was a monster sturgeon. He took a worm and salmon egg bait combo on a trout rig with 4 lb test line. He didn’t even know he was hooked until he got closer to the shelf of the shoreline, then he’d tear off 50-60 yards at a time. This went on for about three hours, until the line weakened and snapped. The mono on the reel was essentially useless after that, all stretched out and wrought with memory....
Lost a nice large mouth bass this evening. Got it up to the shore and my knot failed. About 5 pounds. I don't mind losing the fish but my lure is still in it. I hope that fish will be able to eat freely and the hook rusts out quickly. This sort of thing bothers me. Hasn't happened in years but that doesn't make it easier.
