Took a few buddies out crabbing, we caught about 50 undersized crab so we moved around a lot to find bigger ones.
Ended the day with 18 keepers and a few over 7”. We were in 90’ to 190’ of water outside the bay.
Had some excitement as I threw a crab trap in.the net caught my live vest release and deployed it, it was quite loud and it gets very tight around your neck very quickly. I ordered a rearming kit so I can put it back in service.

Nice K Krew.
That's a decent catch.
Too bad so many under size.
I Ave BPS vests. I pulled the cord on mine awhile back getting it outta storage box 👍

Still a nice catch K. Sorry about the vest, but now you know what to expect if you ever need it. Thanks for the pictures.

Nice catch , bringing the crab up from 190 ft. are they still alive?? At least you know the vest works

Nice catch!
I preemptively shortened my rip cord to avoid the problem that you had. It's still long enough to grab but short enough not to catch -- I always go through the motions of grabbing it when I put it on.
BTW - I really like your flags/floats. Are they store-bought or DYI?
Wow! That is deep crabbing for this part f the world. That being said, I went out as a spectator on a trawler back in the day, when commercial trawling was legal. We dragged deep. the net came up with so many massive crabs (bycatch) that it went beyond disgusting. I might have to give that area a try next summer. Note: I sure am glad trawling is now outlawed. The crew sweeps off the deck full of crushed biomass from fish to many different types of shelled critters of every pull.
This is not a commercial fisherman slam. Just a side comment on a deep water crabbing post. I am commenting on one type of commercial fishing. If it were not for commercial fishing and what they pay for coops and hatchery operations, salmon might be extinct by now.
Thanks again for the reminder to try crabbing 200 feet deep.
I happy your're seeing lots undersized....good crabbing next year. Glad you didn't follow your crab trap overboard!!
Good idea on shortening the length of the cord when I reload the cylinder.
The crab flags are homemade markers I made, they are good for rougher water and swells, the extra buoys also help keep the first buoy from being pulled under on bigger swells. I also added yellow as it is easier to see on rough days.
Yes they are still alive at deeper depths

Good job on the high flier buoys K Krew! Also on the crab, I guess the larger ones are harder to find because of commercial opening up?
Yes it’s slowed down some. the commercial guys are catching a lot of crab which is good for them since their season was started so late. I launch by Spud point in Bodega bay and they were off loading a lot of crab.
