Here in orange county, for the last few years we have not had many opportunities to get on the ice due to warmer winters. I love reading articles and stories from successful anglers who like to share their secrets on how to catch Walleye and yellow perch, so keep them coming.
I feel your pain,it's already shaping up to be the 2nd year w no frozen water down here too.😒
We are in the same predicament here in Northern Michigan once again this season. So far I've only been out one time...about a week ago before things turned warm and buggered up what good ice we had.
Managed to catch a few dozen yellow perch, bit nothing large enough to bother keeping. I like to have 2 rods going about 5 feet apart. One with a large flashy spoon or jigging minnow to attract fish from a distance so they congregate beneath me, and the other rod with a smaller perch lure on it to get a bite.
Sometimes the perch take the big lure, but most often the smaller offering. I leave the big lure down in case a northern pike happens by, which is always a fun surprise!
Since many of us are sitting comfortably in our homes, awaiting safe ice, here are a few memory photos from last season that I have posted before. I hope they help to inspire!
Over the past few seasons I have been enjoying the use of some Haley jigs, set up with the small drop chain and a single hook with the colored resin "bait" target.
Of all the ice fishing tackle I use for yellow perch, these small "bent" style slab grabber spoons catch more fish than anything else. The colored bead and painted "eye" is the trigger for strikes!
If I only took out a small single lure box...these would definitely be my top picks for our local perch.
Got to love it when there is a chance to entice a pike to take a bait!

I got out once for an hour and a half while my son was at a friends birthday party. Didn’t catch a thing. But I watched a guy catch one out of my hole I abandoned about 10 min after I left.🤦🏻♂️
Where did you get that auger for the drill?

Cabellas, it was $119 and it works like a dream. Travel Bag has a spot for the drill, batteries and charger. Only suggestion I’d make is it would be easier to use if the drill had the extra handle near the chuck that most 1/2” chuck drills come with. That drill has one that clamps on but I didn’t have it with me. Luckily ice was thin 5” so it wasn’t an issue. If there had been a foot of ice without that handle it would have been hard to control.
