American Indian Methods of Naming Their Children!

“What seems to be the matter, Sleeping Dog, you appear to be ill, or at least under the weather all week for some reason.” “Well, Dad, you didn’t give me a very exciting name, nor a clever name, or an unusually nasty name like a lot of my friends. You know, like my cousin, Horse Piss or his little brother, Horse Poop! Why couldn’t I have an exciting name like, “Scalp an Apache” you know what I mean?

Well, son those are rather unusual monikers, but in our family, we stick with the old history of naming children, those names are a current trend but are not the method how our children’s names are handed down.

We want to stay with the traditional names that our tribe has used for hundreds of moons! That is after the brave has impregnated his wife, and walks to the door of his teepee, he is duty bound to name his future child after the first thing he sees! He cannot vary this as some of the modern method that is now used.

This means the child’s name could be almost anything! The baby’s name could be Stud Piss, Deep Snow, Zig Zag Lightening, Swarming Mosquitos? Even Rattlesnake, or Tumble Bug! You get the idea?

Yes, Dad, is that why you got the name Mule Hiney? Yes, now you are catching on Sleeping Dog!

Bur always remember, when dealing with white man, you need to be cautious, we don’t have to give them the precise name we use for a person, place, or thing. For instance, Dallas could have been derived from an American Indian word for buffalo poop! I am sure there are others, but nothing comes to mind. So, when you grow up, you too will have this fun game of naming your children. Just Sayin…RJS

You got me wondering all night, so now I will ask, why didn't we hear the name "Talking Woman" as a common name? I know it wouldn't be manly, but honestly? Think about it.
I'm just glad my grandfather didn't have a strange name since I am named after him.

Yes, I have definitely heard of the two dogs***, but decided against using that as being too much for our audience. Just Sayin...RJS

This sounds self serving, but there is inEnglish Royalty records another Robert Samples who was present and witnessed the benighting of another royal! I have no way of knowing if we are possibly related, but it is interesting. If I ever get too arrogant or high handed, just remind me that was over 400 years ago and so watch it!
