Growing up in Arizona, if out of 300 yards out of town and you saw a wild animal within 10 feet of you, you would yell at it and stamp on the ground.
If it didn't leave now that it knew, you knew it was there you shot it!
Because it was either sick or had Rabies. I am talking about smaller towns than Phoenix or Tucson of course for the distance outside of town.
