Welcome to the stage Charlie, sorry I can't help ya but others maybe along to help. I'd also call local bait shops and talk with them. Good luck out there an share your pics man. we all love pics 👍
I spent many years pounding the surf Monterey Bay. Santa Cruz a little bit in the was a big revolution. I think mid eighties for surf Perch Motoroil colored grubs with football sinker with a hole in the middle and a swivel to let the bait go back-and-forth was just killing him and getting instead of getting 1 to 3 or 4 fish in a whole day. You'd fill a 1/2 a bucket up. I don't know if it's that way now. I did a lot of top water striper fishing. Most exciting fishing in the world. Don't throw the Bates way out. They're right in front of you tend to 30 feet from the shoreline. There should be a trough leading to where the rip current goes back out. Usually there's one on each side of the rip current. That's where the fish are, and that's where they're feeding 2 hours before high tide 2:00 after and then that's it. Good luck you can also use bait with that rig
