Met up at the marina at 5:30 AM. Because high tide was at about 7:15 AM our plan was to leave early in the dark and get our first string set, and then pull the first string just at daylight. The first part of the plan went well until we got out into the bay in the dark and in fog that was so thick you couldn’t see 20 yards in front of you. The radar and GPS helps however, the GPS refresh rate was so slow that we zigzagged our course out because you couldn’t tell if you were over correcting or not. I don’t think we’ll go out in the dark and the fog again. We did get our first string set at sunup about 45 minutes late, but it was a good set, it only took two pulls of the string to get our limits and then some. It was a different spot that we have tried in years past, but for some reason, something on the bottom (probably intermittent rocks) was tearing the netting on our pots up something awful. Still a great day of crabbing with nice jumbo crab. I was even able to get back to the dock, and on the road before the holiday commute traffic started, win/win!

Another great haul Denny. Dark is tricky, fog is worse, and combined it's scary buddy. Glad you made it safely and caught a bunch. Thanks for the pix and cool video.

Thanks Fred, scary indeed, if just dark we’d have been able to at least see the lights of the Golden Gate and in combo with the GPS and Radar keep a straight and safe bearing. Dark I’m ok, dark and thick fog won’t do it again……

Yikes. Glad you’re safe. Good you got some crab. Glad you learned it’s not fun or something to do again. I know a guy that was on a boat when fog rolled over them and they ended up on beach ( accidentally). Another boat flew up on the sand near them a bit later. Had to be rescued. Luckily the Rocky part of the jetty was 40 feet north. May not have ended the same.
Glad you’re home safe.

Thanks Jeremy, the fog and being dark was soooo disorienting. I’ve sailed in those conditions before but the boat had autopilot, huge difference maintaining a straight course.

Fishing on the Napa River has been spotty but we have done pretty good, sometimes having to stay out a bit longer. Your welcome anytime to come on out!!!
