Moss Lake Kings Mtn. NC Crappie and Hybrid Stripers
Hey guys...I'm new and me and my grandson need help fishing Moss Lake, Kings Mountain NC. We are so tired of fishing our hearts out to catch crappie and Hybrid stripers. We have the Boyscouts brush pile maps and know about where the crappie SHOULD be, but we come back empty and about to quit Moss Lake because it ain't cheap to fish there after you buy a yearly permit or $16 a day to fish. We've tried live minnows, mullet, chicken livers lures...you name it. We don't want your favorite spot, just some advice on catching these fish! We want to eat them....we have caught many largemouth there but we don't eat them...they taste too fishy. No problem catching 5 pounders on big live minnows. We've not caught even one crappie or hybrid. Thanks...we need help.I have a Tracker Crappie Pro and about ready to sell it if we don't start catching fish.....thks...Jeff
Welcome to the stage. I have fished Moss Lake a few years ago for bass. I have caught a few. It seems like every time I go there is a fishing tourn there.I don’t usually fish for crappie. I am over on the south west side of Rutherford County. I have fishedLake Rhodehis and Lake James. I fish more in SC than NC. Bobby
Thanks HBM...I've fished Lake James with mixed results...caught some nice Smallmouth on 4 inch plastic worms,
but I live less than fifteen minutes from Moss Lake and I need some good advice on catching fish there..heck I'd even be happy to catch some nice catfish. I wonder sometimes if I've forgot how to fish...that dang Moss Lake lake seems to be sterile for us! ...thks for the reply....Jeff

Hi Jeff. I'm in Nebraska but I believe crappie fishing is crappie fishing. Some will say that to catch crappie you have to use small jig heads with small bodies. That doesn't work for us. We use the bigger, "regular" jig head with larger bodies or Mr. Twister curly tails. Cast them or troll them and get results. Another option, especially when you have located them is to troll #5 or #6 crank bait at 2 or more mph.
Don't sell your boat, just keep trying different techniques or come up with your own technique. Time spent on the water with your grandson is worth more than the fish you catch.
Thanks...I used to crappie fish cedar tree brush piles at Lake Norman in the 60's and absolutely killed slab crappies in the dead of winter using red head, white tail jigs. I just can't figure these Moss Lake crappies out. I'm not giving up but I know my grandson thinks I don't have a clue. Our joke is that we just "go boatin" cause he's pretty sure we ain't gonna catch any fish. I agree...no better way to spend a day than with your grandson...we do have some great fellowship.....thanks again....Jeff ( I do have a Lowrance and Garmin fish finder...might as well leave them off)
