Work has been getting in the way of a lot of things lately, especially fishing. I decided to sneak away last Saturday afternoon and wet a line. My wife had plans for us in the evening so I said I’d be home by 4:30. It’s been cold and we’ve had some snow in the mountains. I wasn’t sure what I’d find at the lake, but I took some warm clothes and a couple rods and went to see. There was no snow on the trail to the water or on the shore on the north side of the lake. I picked a spot and started fishing. It was fairly warm, probably 40 degrees, mostly sunny, and just a slight breeze. I tried some different lures, with no bite for a while. I decided to try the old standard night crawler and finally got a really light nibble and caught a small rainbow trout. I fished for quite a while longer with no luck. I decided to leave and head to Sportsmans Warehouse to pick up some ice fishing tackle. I was all packed up and reeled in my line to leave when I realized the wind had stopped, the lake was glass, and there was starting to be some shadows on the water. I looked out and said to myself that in the summer if I was to cast right along the shadow line I’d catch a fish. I casted out an seconds later a fish hit my worm really hard. It fought hard enough I wasn’t sure what it was until I got it close. Turned out to be a pretty nice rainbow. I decided to keep it for dinner and said if there was one there, there had to be more. Turned out I didn’t get anything else, but it was too nice to leave right away. Needless to say I got home a couple hours late. I really needed that fish therapy. It had been way too long since I’d been out.

Thank you sir, she totally gets it. I called as soon as I had service and she was just fine. She knows I’m less grumpy if I get to go fishing.
That looks like a nice trout, and yes fish therapy is good for the soul. My wife likes to fish more than I do, so if I go fishing she is with me, and wants to stay longer.

You are a very fortunate man Joel.

Nice catching Stuco! I'm so glad you got out before you have to cut holes in the water. Sounds like excellent therapy and finding a couple fish to participate is awesome. Thanks for the beautiful pictures, and Tight Lines my friend.

Thanks Fred. The ice is slow to form this year. We had planned to take the kids from church the day after Christmas to a lake that’s often frozen by Thanksgiving. We weren’t sure it was going to have enough ice so we had to put it off. That’s not all bad as I may head back up to this lake this weekend.

Yep, that’s close enough to home I can decide to go fishing at 6:00 or so in the summer and get a couple hours of fishing before the sun goes down.

Looks like about 16" of fun catching there Stuco. Nice narrative there and beautiful pic of the lake too. That last cast does pay off now and than.

That’s what I thought. It takes a whole lot less prep and gear to grab some worms and a rod and head out to fish from the shore.
