Headed to the lake this morning. Launched at Capel cove at 7am. Started trolling out of the cove. 44 degrees out and water temperature was 54 degrees. Started out with two rods top lining and one on the downrigger. No action in the cove and minimal fish being marked. Headed to skiers cove. Could not believe that amount of boats trolling both the mouth of the cove and the adjacent shoreline. At least fifteen boats. We trolled the area trying different lures and depths in relation to what we were seeing on the graph. We managed one nice rainbow that hit a pink Yuzori top lining. Marked a lot of fish at 40 to 50 feet chasing bait balls. Tried jigging over them, no luck except for a nice LMB. While we were there we never seen a single boat deploy their net!. After several hours we decided to run up to Putah creek. We switched over to what I believe after fishing this lake for nearly forty years the best trout lure ever developed, a chrome and blue Kastmaster! After about an hour or so trolling this lure with a 3/4 ounce trolling weight through the mouth of the creek we nailed three more beautiful rainbows! Plus we were the only boat there! Kept three nice fish for the bbq.

Thanks folks! You know that with all these new type of lures and so many different colors and patterns I find that fishermen start to over think it to much. The trout haven’t changed, they really didn’t get smarter! I believe in keeping it simple and stick to what has worked for u in the past. What’s that old saying… keep it simple stupid, no offense to anyone!!!!

While we we hooking up on the nice fish trolling under and through the Putah Creek bridge. There was a gentleman fishing from shore. He must have been noticing our success and he was out of casting distance to our hot zone. What blew us away next, this gentleman scaled the underside of the bridge and walked out a hundred yards on the 18” catwalk to reach one of the bridge’s foundation pileings.that we were trolling next to.He was sitting precariously.trying to fish least seventy feet above the lake. I guess desperate times lead to desperate measures. I think we might need to start a go fund account to by this guy a yak! blow up the pic and u can see him on the right side!!! As u can see the lake was like glass. By ten o’clock it was 62 degrees!

I use to always think the same thing ( still do ) when I went to Herman Creek in Cascade Locks ( Columbia River Gorge ) .

We targeted Steelhead from little boats with 2 anchors to hold boat still. We hooked bunches of them usually after the wind kicked up. It was only about 4-7’ deep. We used purple coon shrimp with a Corky about 2-3 inches up the leader with toothpick to hold it there. BUT then one year the new thing was to bank fish in an area 1/8 mile away ( same water ) with bobbers and similar rigged coon shrimp. But if you didn’t do the new set up the next year you didn’t get a bite or a fish. We tried the other area and the old no bobber etc.

It was weird but there I switched to whatever the NEW set up was for about 3 more years. Then it was closed and no more fishing allowed there. The good ol days in my fishing memories.
