Went out Thursday 12/14/23 with my son to fish live bait last few hours of incoming below Rio vista, hit the water about noon after getting our mudsuckers. We left our regular striper gear at home and brought the lightweight stuff for fun,,had a blast on schoolies drifting in 20 to35feet between the power lines and the barn, up to across from bridge at 3 mile,,,,pretty much non stop action but nothing big, however quite a bit of fun on the light gear!!!!! We hooked more than we landed and kept one which was deep hooked, about 5 pounds,,,fished about 3 hours and hooked 25 or so,,,,pretty good day!!!! Luckily had my rubber boots with me or it would have been real uncomfortable putting boat back on trailer. Thinking of going down around Antioch on sunday, maybe throw swims and troll hopefully find some bigger fish,,,,

You're right -- with the cooler temps they're finally starting to head into the river system and Delta interior.

Hey Steve, I bet he got the live mudsuckers from Rio Vista bait & tackle. I spoke to them last week and they had them. They are not cheap, four bucks each! He was fishing in one of my favorite stretches of the river! Love fishing that area with light gear for the stripers. It’s a blast!

If they hooked 25 or so and the bait was 4 bucks apiece, that's more than I wanna spend for bait.

Agreed. We normally hook them through the upper lip.which I believe allows them to swim more naturally, but can lead to losing the bait on missed hook ups. Can get expensive. There was a post last month by I believe from Papa D ( I may be wrong) on how he rigs his live mudsuckers. Looks like a great way improve positive hook ups and not lose your live bait on missed fish. Gonna try it next time. Also found that when we are on a good live bait bite jigging P-line Laser Minnow lures can be very effective and a lot more cheaper!

Sounds like a good idea. When ya headed out?
Most likely not until after the holidays. Looking at early January. With the upcoming rain forecast, might change the river conditions. Latest forecast they are predicting alt least three inches of rain in that area. I’m sure the river will muddy up which will definitely affect the live bait bite. Plus the heavy rains will most likely initiate the river with debris and floating hazards!

Rio Vista B&T usually have them in the morning but often run out during the day.
MegaBait in Manteca usually has them (call 1st) and remember they are only open early hours on Sundays.
The gas station on the corner of Grantline and Tracy Blvd (Polar something) has them on occasion (call 1st).
If you want to see how I thread them up see:
