I'm in costa rica now,visited the Masaya yesterday in Nicaragua, such a mesmerizing experience to be able to stand at the top of and look into the chamber. On occasion when the smoke cleared you can see the magma about a 1,000ft down.
Yes, seven or eight years ago we fished a week where a river entered the Atlantic for Tarpon. When returning home, we ventured around a day and the volcano was one of the stops. It was much less smokey and possible activity then.
We heard the rumor that the U.S. government considered this area to cut a canal, rather than Panama, but the volcanic activity caused them to avoid this area. Just Sayin...RJS

Can only stand there for 20 minutes because of the carbon monoxide & sulfur.
