My grandson was out digging in the dirt today, and uncovered this coin. I do a little collecting, but have no idea on this one. It appears to be foreign, but I have no clue. Do any of you recognize it?

We have been doing some research on the coin, and believe it to be a Roman coin.
If so, those letters are probably Greek. That’s why it is not easy to read (unless you know Greek 😆) We found a similar coin on the internet, but have yet to figure out an age or value. We just wonder how the heck it got in Topeka, Ks.! Here’s the pic we found.

The letters are like those on all the fraternities and sororities up on the hill at KU. Lol 😂
All Greek to me!

What kind of area in Topeka was it found? Some bodies yard, play ground, the woods historical site, where?

If you can make out the lettering you might be able to google it.

Randy,

If you haven't already here's a couple related sites.

Would be interesting to know its weight and size.

Thank you much, sawheeler! It’s about the size of a half dollar; so far that’s all I know. I’ll check out those sites. 👍

Now that is interesting, not a common place where there will be a lot of walking activity where it could have fallen out. Who knows who walked the grounds way back then!!!!!

Randy, looked at a bunch of Roman coins on the net and found this one. Very similar back side and front is a little different lettering. Looking closely at the hair style and neck area seems the same though and the lettering does go all across the top.

Yeah; that’s what makes it so interesting and intriguing! A new coin collector may have been hatched today! 🤣
He’s a VERY intelligent and inquisitive kid. He and his older brother like unusual coins already!

I think any way you slice it you’ve got a Roman era coin, so that young man found a nearly 2000 year old coin!
