Got the crab pot puller remounted with a whole new mounting set up and went crabbing in a new spot off the SF coast on 12/9. The new mounting will take quite a bit more abuse than I plan to give it and what it had received previously. Crabbing was slow and we didn’t limit, but did have a number of nice gauge busters and was definitely worth while. Heading out again on the 12th to see if we can locate them and limit out.
Puller with new mount, 1/4” thick plate, 1” thick wall SS side support tubes and extension shortened 6”.
One of the gauge busters and the cooler, total 17 crab for 2 people.
Largest of the gauge busters.

The new setup looks good -- just don't try to pull in any entangled whales!😜
Nice setup, and the cooler of crab is great!!

Nice catching Denny. I like the new setup, especially the gunnel support bars. Now don't go trying to raise any sunken ships, and you should be alright.

Thanks Fred, no more embedded abandoned commercial pots for us!

Thanks Gordon, we are very pleased with the performance of the new set up. We just can’t remove and stow the puller, takes some tools and time. But that means were ll set up to go when we get to the boat and a deterrent to potential thieves.

Thanks Bobby and our treasure will be restricted to our crab nets/pots and their bounty!

That sure looks like a lot of fun.
Nice set up. I appreciated you trying to pull up the commercial rig. I once pulled a derelict commercial trap that I snagged fishing, or at least snagged the slimey kelp covered line. It took some effort, but once we got the trap up, it had 18 crabs about 12". They were extremely aggressive. I have no clue what they were feeding on, but something was clearly drawing food into the trap. I can only assume they were feeding on the weakest of the bunch. Of course when they broke open a crab, more crabs came in to join the feed only to become food themselves. I have gotten flatfish as well in traps, so I expect they also became sacrificial offerings. Bottom line: The lost and illegal (no escape cotton line openings) became a permanent killing machine. What I can not figure, is how the crabs got so big as they need to molt to get that big. Thus, they would become easy prey. All crabs were released and trap destroyed. Note: I have crabbed that area for years and have never caught a crab over 9 inches.
Thanks Ranger it is! Despite the morning cold, choppy waters and handling frozen bait I look forward to it every time.

Nice set up. I appreciated you trying to pull up ... (

Man Bapabear, you make me want to go tie that trap up to the back of the boat and try and get it unstuck……but I think my co-owner and I have learned our lesson and limitations and will stick with our hoop nets and recreational crab pots (when we’re allowed!).
