Help: Fishing rod, glass bottle, glow sticks?

Last night we went fishing for Salmon, saw at least 3 groups of people on the pier with their rods casted out and a glass bottle full of glow sticks by the rod. When the bottle fell over they would come running and hook the fish. How is this set up? Also what is it called? I would love to try it out! Thank you in advance!

EDIT: I FOUND THE ANSWER. Being new to fishing I just did not know what to search. But I'm posting what I found below in case anyone else wants to try it! Differences it, rather than water, the people by me were using a clear glass bottle full of glow sticks!

The method described in the article seems like it would definitely put you at risk of losing your rod to the drink. Especially if pier fishing at the ocean.

Losing the rod to the drink? I was worried about loosing the rod when the fish starts running with the bait, but having the bail open makes it harmless so long as you don't get spooled. Either way, I don't want to lose my rod either. I'll be sure to ask some guys at the pier if they have more tips and post them here!

Oh yea, by "drink" I meant the ocean.

I'm looking to start pier fishing myself as I've only been inland fishing for bass and planted trout. I picked up a sabiki rig just yesterday and plan on trying it out soon for some pacific mackerel.

Let me know if you hear any other good tips. Tight lines!

Lanyards will fix loosing your rods if there's something to attach them too.

aka. Dog leash with a loop on one end and clip on the other.

These work really good at night, from Wish.com. Check all of the shipping costs as well as the "price".
This one was "Free" with $2.85 shipping. Make sure the one(s) that you buy have 2 bases. One for smaller rods and ones for bigger rods.

Or you can go to bass pro and spend from $6-$8 for one.

Here's one for $2 total. Free $2 shipping. The on solid ones are rated for 600 hours. The intermitant ones, Red slow flash, then Green flashing, go 1000 Hours. I have use the intermitant ones for 2 years before the battery died. Finding a replacement battery cheaper than buying a new one was not easy. Found them on Lowes 5 for $8. CR1225 once you put it on the rod tip, you can cast with it there and pull in the fish without removing it. Have had the line get under the clips but was easy to clear. Good Luck and catch more fish.
I use them and these instead of bells as I am High Freq Deaf. Can't hear the bells.

80 DB will wake you up from a nap. LOL Only problem is the batteries seem to collect light corrosion, so when they don't work I take them out and rub them on my pants and put them back in. 3 batteries and the batteries cost more than the unit. Don't put the ine in the little loop, use the U for the line. They are for bigger rods and you can shift them around the rod to make it more or less sensitive. Unhook the line before yanking the rod to set the hook.

This type of tight line fishing, you stand the bottle up about a foot from your rod after you cast out, lay the rod down, with the bail open take the line over and on the bottle, when the fish takes the bait the bottle tips over letting you know fish on. Reel in slack and set the hook
