Hello, my name is Stochia and I live in San Diego but originally Born and raised in Tennessee. I love to fish and especially night fish. I am looking for areas to go in the San Diego area especially for night fishing. This is all fairly new as I have only fished Rivers and lakes. Thank you!

Welcome to the Stage, Stochia!

I'm too far north to give you any specific tips.

However, if you want to try some beach or pier fishing here's what I can offer...

You should be able to catch sand fleas (aka mole crabs) almost year round. They make great bait for just about anything that's running. You'll need a long-handled rake/net to catch them (visit YouTube for instructions). Squid is the other go to bait.

You should also check out:
https://www.pierfishing.com/?s=San+Diego+
Even if you're going to fish from shore, read the fishing tips for the nearby piers -- it will tell you what's running and best baits to use depending on the time of year. Also, in California, you don't need a license to fish from any public pier.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I had no idea about the No fishing license for pier fishing!

You're very welcome.

The 'no license ' is sort of a word of mouth thing -- that is why I mentioned it. It also applies to the windward (outward facing) side of any public breakwater.

The CDFW has a map on their website that lists them all.

Although I have a license, I take advantage of the free access whenever I take unlicensed guests fishing.

Stochia,
Welcome to the Stage and SoCal.
I am a 20+ year transplant to Escondido (SD North County) from NYS where I grew up fishing natural glacial lakes and multi-species river systems (& I do mean multi...large mouth, small mouth, pike, Tiger muskies, walleyes and more).
So if you can bare with my rambling:
1. I know nothing of saltwater fishing, being a fresh water only guy, only throwing artificials.
2. PapaD offers you a lot if you rig for salt. I'm figuring this may be brand new to you. If this becomes your choice of attack, search for the local tide charts as this appears important. Do one or more pier scouting runs and talk to people and most importantly understand their rigs (line weights, sinker weights & bait).
3. So here's my recollections of moving to SD County:
Where's the water? (Oh, we don't have any here.)
You have to pay to fish from shore?
Most all county fishing reservoirs only let you fish through sundown?
Dang, they have really big bass here (I mean really big).
As I don't target stocked fish (rainbows in winter and catfish in summer here); so be it. Largemouths it shall be.
4. For general information on SD County reservoirs...https://www.sandiego.gov/reservoirs-lakes.
5. In Escondido, Lake Dixon is my home lake. Know it pretty well. A few photos (from shore) over the last couple weeks attached. They bite pretty well into the winter (while everyone else is shooting for stocked rainbows). Lake Dixon is the only county reservoir that does not require a CA fishing license as they have some sort of "aquaculture" site designation. Another thing (just my opinion) about Lake Dixon is "never on a weekend," which may apply to other county waters. Way too many people. If you are into catfish or trout, they seem to be a dime a dozen if you follow their website stocking schedules. Lake Dixon allows night fishing till around 11pm during most of July and August. Oh, by the way, we don't really have winters here. We have only green and brown seasons. Just two.
6. Let's go fishing.
I hope something within adds to your developing arsenal.
It is different out here.

Welcome Stochia, I am married to a Chattanooga gal who hates fishing. I, on the other hand, was raised in the Wisconsin northwoods & have done all sorts of fishing. Like Sawheeler, I have been in Escondido over 20 years & Poway over 23 years. Nightfishing is a blast for Catfish, but there are very few lakes ( Dixon, Poway) that have nightfishing during mainly July & August. The piers in the bay & ocean are good night choices that are open year round. Good luck & tight lines.

Stochia,
Here's a link that may help your San Diego fishing (both fresh & salt) explorations.
https://www.sdfish.org/
It introduced me to the fact we actually have a fishable river here.
Look for any thread re: SD River.
