What equipment does somebody interested in beach fishing need to buy before they can start fishing?

I'm currently travelling in my van and still have a good few months left. In the time I've been away I've watched people with a rod on the beach bringing catching fish for dinner and it's captivated me.

If i wanted to start fishing myself, what basic equipment would i need to get started? I don't need any unnecessary extras, just the absolute basics so that I can try my hand and see if i enjoy it.

Thanks

pyramid weights I would say 1oz -5 oz. I would get varying sizes of circle hooks. Sabiki rigs are good for catching bait fish but not typically fishing from the beach. 20lb -30lb line. Pliers and clippers. A rag to hold the fish. Steel leader pompano rigs.

1.5 inch pvc rod holder allows you to relax and watch your rod hands free. A local bait shop should help steer you in the right direction too. It's addicting though. A month from now your van might be full of fishing gear!

While you are watching walk bye those fishing and check out what they have. Most people will talk to you while they are fishing its not like they are moving up and down the beach. From what I have seen they park, toss, drink, talk to other fisherpersons, and enjoy the sounds and beauty of the beach.

Go to Walmart Spend $50.00 on a rod, reel, mono, terminal tackle & bait $30.00 on a cooler, ice & case of beer, sunscreen & and a lawn chair. What more do you need?

I just bought a diawa 12 foot rod at a swapmeet for $5. Great for surf fishing. 20lb test line 2oz pyramid weights. Steel rod holder and a reel. Also cheap at swapmeet.

I like at least a 3000 Fla. fishing products reel and a 9ft.or 10ft. Ugly stick rod.And the tackle in above post .But Wall mart has some good combos at their stores by any beach.Get a 2piece rod ,easy to store in your van.If you are fishing to eat try fishing the tide breaks closer in.Try finding sandfleas or clams for free bait ,but shrimp from the food stores always works.Use a 2 hook rig with a sinker at the bottom. Or just watch what others are using at the beach you want to fish at ,and go with what they are using .Good luck!

Sandfleas are terrific, The soft shell stage is almost a guaranteed bait for pompano or anything else in the surf. I use a 1/4 inch mesh on a two foot triangle of wood frame to catch them in the sand where the water washes them on the beach.

I have no doubt you will be as hooked on surf fishing as I am when you make your first catch. I would offer some caution about some of the toothy critters you will no doubt be catching, several have razor sharp teeth and they can nail you aren't careful. I put a boot on them before I use a long hemostat to remove the hook.
Have a Blast!

I would also recommend spider weights. Preferably the breakaway design. They come in 2,4,6, and I believe 8 oz. The “legs” will hold firmly in the sand against the current and on the breakaway style the legs unfold when you go to retrieve. Good luck

Be careful of the hardheads, you don't want to mess with them.
