I've been wanting to trying out a baitcast rod and reel instead of regular spinning rod and reel but my budget is only about $150. Any suggestions on good rod and reel within that price range?

I just recently but a lews speed spin combo and Berkley lightning baitcadting rod for 140 in total about. It's a nice beginner set up with a 6.1.1. Ratio which is somewhat universal. There is probs better as I'm a beginner myself lol

I'm a pretty big fan of the Berkley Lightning and the Cherrywood HD (inexpensive and good experiences) so I was probably going to get that. And I'll have to look into the Lew's baitcast reels

Speed spin may make it seem like a spin reel but it said speed spin laser sharp(70usd) but yeah good luck! I love bait casters after learning how to use em

That's exactly why I want to get into it, I've heard such great things about it and how much better it is than other types of reels. Thanks for the suggestion

I would look at the Lew’s combos, such as the Lew’s Mach 1-Speed Spool SLP. Awesome reels paired with great rods.

Go cheaper on the rod than the reel; you would be better off with the $30-$40 ugly stick and a daiwa tatula 100 (Amazon 120) or daiwa Fuego reel ($90). You can upgrade the rod later (st croix is great).

I've always heard the opposite, spend on the rod. A more sensitive rod will let you feel the fish way better.

It definitely does and I would consider it very important. But for someone’s first baitcaster, having an antibacklash system would make his life so much easier and I personally would value it above the rod. Ymmv

Look into a 13 casting rod and baitcast reel. Rod $60 and reel $80. I love my set up! You can find em on Tackle Warehouse. All my rods are 13. I would also recommend a Diawa cc80 reel. The 13 rods come in a bunch of sizes. 🎣

Buying A cheap bait caster for your first one is a bad idea. Bait casters are hard to learn to use even if you have a good one the first time. A cheap one will be nothing but headaches. I agree with Hannibal on this one. Spen the majority on the reel

Good point! That said, you don’t have to spend $200 to get a fine casting reel. Diawa has some really nice options. I’d suggest when you do choose a reel to give it a proper lube job. I always open up my reels & oil them first thing 🎣
