Neighbor got a huge one yesterday. Still a great place to reside no matter what anyone thinks. This year has been great for Salmon. I wish some of my old friends were still alive or the other older ones wanted to go fishing still. Grandkids seem to take over old friends time but that’s a great way to spend your life. But this is WHY people fish for salmon here.

Based on the color and the size of its stomach it looks likel a pre spawn salmon to me. I maybe wrong , but if so why would anyone what to keep such a fish and not allow it to spawn , lay its eggs and further enhance the salmon population! The meat probably tastes like sh…t

Totally pre-spawn and literally the ONLY time I would eat a salmon. If you're eating post spawn salmon you are eating a salmon you found on the bank. You'd be dining with the gulls. ahahah

Have you eaten much fresh caught Salmon? Hens have eggs… ( bait ) to cure. Bucks have excellent meat still even when that dark. But whatever. You eat em after the spawn? Hatcheries keep the fish going. Native fish are usually off limits for BBQ

By the looks of the head ( jaw ) it’s a hen. Those are Eggs in the belly area. Probably $100 or more worth.

Really! Good one my friend. No salmon in Italy. That would explain his stupidity! Teach your fellow Oregonians how not destroy a fishery!!!! Question, did that Italian even have a legal fishing license!?

That is a pre spawn. Why keep such a valuable fish for the future of the salmon fishery?

Huh. I was joking dude. Remember the pictures from Italy? I don’t care where you’re from buddy. Sucks if you’re going away mad dude. That wasn’t the idea. Remember when I kept joking about you being extradited during your vacation?

You’re wrong about the fisheries here. Hatcheries are what keep the Salmon going. You can’t harvest a native that spawns. Hatcheries collect enough eggs and milk to produce enough to keep them going. You need to read up on it is my guess. Sorry if you’re offended it was to crack you up dude.

Hatcheries milk the bucks and fertilize the eggs in a perfect environment then release them. Native fish are not allowed to be kept usually. Actually that is a huge fish. In nature large and small males are favored. Because hens drop eggs … bucks try to fertilize… small jacks can come milk the eggs under a large Buck but then you wouldn’t have a fish the size of this one.

I use to fish natives when we could. Sometimes the rules will change late in season to allow native fish pending on location. Actually the largest I ever caught was 55” and about 60# it was a Buck and was excellent eating even with dark skin. Hens burn up all their red meat on egg production. Bucks don’t.
