in a lake I fish in washington they stocked tiger muskies to keep pike minnows in check which gives you a chance to catch the tiger muskies but you can only keep 1 over 54" or something like that. never caught them but have caught pike minnows on a simple worm harness and spinners. my least favorite way they use to get rid of the puke minnow is to poison the lake and then restock with the desired fish.

If you research the #'s, yeah...a couple or three, maybe even 10, make big bucks off of Pikeminnow mitigation,
but the #'s drop off dramatically after about 6-8 fishermen. The high-dollar guys not only wish to remain anonymous, but definitely won't share the expenses of putting a boat in daily, gear, bait, overnight lodging, gas, etc.,etc. The actual NET INCOME is likely nowhere near what one is led to consider.
Pretty soon Walleyes will be declared on par with the pikeminnows, as far as being detrimental to the salmonid population on theColumbia, and a program to pay for their removal will occur, hopefully, again backed by the Bonneville Dam entity (?).
I will certainly back that effort, and express my support for efforts to prevent any further introduction of any species that are not a part of what should be an historic balance of native species. Even German Brown trout are often considered "invasive" in some waters that used to be exclusively Brookies and Cutthroat.
Scuttlebutt has it that the invasion of walleye is due to a private pond located just off a tributary of the Columbia, that was washed out during a particularly severe rain event. The walleye then migrated downstream to the mainstem and, having no natural predators, bred like bunnies and now are beyond control. No doubt the rumors of the next national record walleye coming not from the upper Midwest per normal, but from the Columbia, are prescient.
The only positive spin one can put on this invasion, is that at least Walleye are quite tasty, unlike the Pikeminnow.
The negative for both remains the same....they eat (gorge themselves on) salmon and steelhead smolts, thus the eventual record size is inevitable.....because we (ODFW hatcheries) keep providing the food !
I guess we'll have to endure, much like the folks who embrace the out-of- control dandelion crop in their yards by making tea and salads from it......I will pass, thank you.
