Eleven anglers busted for snagging fish at night on Salmon RiverBy Steve Featherstone | sfeatherstone@syracuse.com
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation police officers (ECOs) busted 11 anglers last month for snagging fish after dark on the Salmon River.
ECOs received a tip at around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 22 that a group of anglers were fishing the Black Hole section of the Salmon River. The Black Hole is a popular fishing spot just west of Pulaski, below the sewer treatment plant. Fishing is not allowed at night on the Salmon River.
When ECOs arrived at the location, they noticed someone in the parking lot serving as a lookout for the anglers. Rather than alert the lookout to their presence, ECOs stayed hidden and used thermal night vision to observe anglers blind snatching—or snagging—fish.
ECOs surprised the anglers and ordered them to put their fishing gear on the ground, then gathered up salmon already on stringers. They issued 26 tickets for violations including possession of weighted hooks, snag hooks, snatching, fishing after hours, and failure to possess a fishing license.

I like to fish and catch. Don’t really keep many fish and I’m not beyond sneaking in some places I shouldn’t be, but I really can’t understand the mentality of catching fish illegal just to fill the freezer.

I hope they throw the book at them.
I can't stand people that severely abuse the law, or ignore it all together, by that kind of behavior.
People like this should loose their fishing privileges and heavy fines!
People like these impact the legal fishermen by making it necessary to have more and stricter regulations to deal with, as well as the cost of added enforcement. Plus, I feel like they are robbing others of the natural resource. I think the punishment should offer a learning opportunity for others that are willing to take a chance.
What makes it insane is those salmon are in spawning mode. Their flesh is like mush. Nasty tasting. In my opinion barely suitable for anything but fish cakes. It’s ot fishing. No sport what so ever just greed. They all deserve what they get,

This really burns me. They need to be made an example of. A hefty fine, confiscate their gear and a two year ban from fishing would be a good start. If caught again or violating the terms of their penalties then a huge fine and jail time is in order.

Just like the guys stuffing fish with lead to win tournaments.
(only very much worse)

For sure there Oz. Would like to see that catch on instead of ( I heard from a friend of a friend crap )
pretty despicable behavior. They had a "lookout" so knew they were breaking the law. Stiff fine is in order. Some didn't have license so can't confiscate that.
