On this day in Patriot history in 1986, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev began a nuclear arms summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. Reagan abruptly ended it two days later when Gorbachev demanded we dismantle the Strategic Defense Initiative. It wasn’t long before the Soviets came around, and then lost the Cold War altogether. —Mark Alexander
