Hi, I am new to surf fishing. I am a Lady Angler and entered the Pleasure Island Fall Surf Fishing Challenge. It takes place at Carolina/Kure/Fort Fisher Beaches in North Carolina. I am looking for advice with my first tournament. Thanks.

1. You don't have to cast far to catch fish. Some of the best catching is within 50 feet of shore.
2. Learn to read the beach and identify structure. There are several good videos on line. Search beach reading 101.
3. Almost everything out there eats shrimp. Finger mullet work well also,, especially if you can net your own from the surf and fish them live. Can also fish cut bait with bigger mullet and menhaden.
4. Rigs. Simple fishfinder or Carolina rig or use a standard 2 hook dropper rig . Usually a 3 or 4 Oz sinker but more if the currents are strong. I would use a 5/0 circle or j hook with the fishfinder and size 2 through 4/0 for the two hook drop, depending on the fish. 5. Most of all have fun doing this

Everything Flytier said. To add to that you can use the green fishbite shrimp. Also when you walk out on the surf look for a spot where the water doesn’t come out as far as other places. That where hole is and fish get in to feed. If close to a pier fish there where people on the pier are casting over the fish. In the surf fish comes close to feed on the sand fleas. Try the orange sand flea fishbite. With what Flytier said and the information I have shared you should do well. The mullet should hit pretty good. We use a Carolina bottom rig 2-3 hooks long shank. Number 3 hook. 4-5 oz sinker. Also due to current you may need a spider weight. It stays out there.

I have caught plenty of red and black drum right across from Ft. Fisher near the rocks. Fresh Shrimp is the key.

Here is an article on how to read the beach and tackle to use.

In the bait section, there are articles on how to preserve shrimp, how to catch sand fleas, and more. https://ameliafishbites.com/bait/

Hi EEB,
The absolute best advice I can give is for you to watch "Bama Beach Bum" on YouTube. He mainly surf fishes, shows you how to find a rip and the fish, what rigs and bait to use. Very cool and helpful dude.

Bigmark,

Will be fishing just north of entrance to FF this weekend through next Tuesday. Grew up fishing the area with my father - Carolina Beach to FF. Still learning after all the years, never learn it all, but can provide some pointers. Blue fish bucket.

Check out the Surf Fishing section of Amelia Fish Bites. Also, look at the Fishing Websites. Remember that surf fishing is a lifelong learning experience.
