I bought a Suzuki for a small aluminum boat . 4 stroke . Dealer said that it was the best choice if not used regularly cause the others have carbs and if not used regularly the carbs gunk up.

I spent over a year in school for small boat motor repair and in my opinion the tohatsu is by far the better motor. But I'm not buying the motor, so it's really up to you and what you decide. Check with some repair shops would be my advice.

I have a 1995 9.9 hp Johnson 2 stroke still runs great, I ALWAYS disconnect gas line and let the motor run itself out of gas before trailering, and it nearly always cranks up on second pull. I took 2 yr certification course on Marine Propulsion Systems and instructor recommended this. Also he recommended Yamaha as his favorite engine as far as longevity and less problems but to each his own.

When I bought a boat about four years ago, a salesman at West Marine advised me to use non-ethanol gas and add Sta-bil Fuel Stabilizer and Startron Fuel Treatment.

I was away for over a month this past August/September, so my boat sat in the garage the entire time. I took it out last week and it started up at first crank. Never had problems starting big and small motors. I also added these to my pressure washer which sat unused for two years. It fired up after three cranks. I'm sold on these products. Best advice I ever got regarding outboard motors.

Non ethanol gas, STABIL and disconnecting the fuel line and letting
the engine run out of gas are all good ideas if you want your engine to start next time
Let us know what you decide on

You can pay .50 - .60 cents a gallon more for neat 91 fuel without ethanol or buy the 87 octane with ethanol cheaper and add Stabil Marine for $20 for a quart which treats 320 gallons of gas. This should be used in all 2 cycle outboard motors as well as lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, ATV's, old tractors, etc. In addition to this a lead substitute should be added to the fuel in old engines requiring lead to protect the valves and seats. Ethanol is a killer to many older engines so you should counter that with the additives, OR pay the extra .50 to .60 cents per gallon for the ethanol free fuel. It is surprising how few know that the 91 octane non ethanol fuel should not and legally can not be used on vehicles driven on the highways. Using this will destroy the catalytic converters in autos and trucks.
I have an old Johnson (Tubby) short shaft 9.5 h.p. which really moves my extra wide and deep 14' Sea Nympth fishing boat faster than it should. My fishing companion of many years recently said I could go anywhere with my 25 H.P. outboard and could not believe it was 9.5 hp until I showed him the evidence on the engine. Some states including Minnesota are restricting some lakes to 10 hp or smaller motors and talk about implementing that statewide, to the chagrin of all the high power enthusiasts out there.

Big fan of Tohatsu 4-stroke 6hp. Was looking for an internal tank model..6hp is the largest with the tank built in that I could find. Was about to purchase a Mercury, but found out...it's made by Tohatsu !!
I have a 3hp Honda as well, and find it reliable as well. Definitely recommend Startron and non-ethanol gas. Stabile added for storage, for sure.

Run the gas out each time you come in. Mike

I have a 1974 Johnson 25hp and it still runs great! Better to go with a company you can trust I think! Will be cheaper in the long run!!!
