Hi I am Janie and new here and really would love to take my 22 year old son fishing for salmon. He is sick ( a tumor in his head issues) and I really would love to know where to take him and where to go and what to use for bait? Can we catch salmon from shore? I love fishing and also would love to catch a salmon myself. If not, any suggestions on charter boat?
A little out of my range to help you, but welcome to the Stage.

Don't quote me but it'll be tough catching salmon from shore. Better take a boat out to deeper ocean water.

I catch salmon fishing below the John Day dam. I use spinners and I also plunk using spin-n-glows with shrimp or prawns.
There are easy drive to access spots for salmon up on the mouth of the Palouse River at Lions Ferry. You will need to get an Idaho License, but the shore fishing for salmon there is very successful at certain times of the year. Any local non big box tackle shop in Pasco should be able to fill you in. Keep in mind that salmon fishing in rivers is an all or nothing thing as you are targeting fish moving up from the salt to spawn. I can not give you details as I have not fished there myself, but my son in law fin clips and tags salmon at the hatchery there and told me there are even parking lots with permanent rod holders right in front of the parking spots. Good luck. Let us know how it goes. If the salmon are not running, I have heard the channel cat fishing is some of the best in the state there.

Bapa, you have lots of good advise here except an Idaho license is not required at Lyons Ferry. A fish counter told me that the evening bite there is usually better. At the confluence of the Snake and Clear Water the morning bite is usually better. Either a Washington or Idaho license can be used there as it is on the border of the two states. Some people do fish from shore and I'm told they do catch some salmon.

Thanks for the correction. I really hate to put out incorrect information as much as I try to avoid it. Your correction helps me as well as anyone else reading this post. Good luck with your fishing.
