I saw these mushrooms in Central Jersey today. I’m guessing they’re chanterelles. Anyone know what species they are?

Same color as chanterelles, but I would not assume they are those. Too rounded to me 🤷🏼‍♂️

I know people who pick and eat wild mushrooms. Most of them have spent a good amount if time learning how. Some of the rest are dead

Not Chantrells, Jack -o- Lanterns. (omphalotus illudens) very common POISONOUS mushrooms. Toxic is a better definition, it won't kill you but you will be violently ill for a few days. as a long time harvester of Fungi I recommend you either take a course or find a competent person that harvests and learn some basics.

New kinds pop up in the yard every year. Often wonder which are edible and would like to take a course on it.

As a novice mycophogist , I would say, get a good book and research them.
It amazing how many edible shrooms are out there, but there are only a handful that I’m willing to eat.

probably the best book is "our edible toadstools and mushrooms" By W. Hamilton Gibson. However reading the gill structure is something you can only gain by experience.

My Dad and older brother used to pick them and we never die, like you said have to know what you are doing. True story: The little country school up here every year has a spaghetti feed to help out with gym equipment and school supplies. For over 10 years a little old lady always made the spaghetti sauce and it was great. Until the school board found out she was picking the mushrooms out in the forest. We still have the spaghetti feed but they buy the mushrooms now.
