My dad always called a Northern Pike a Northern so I do as well. Am I the only one? What do you call it? Northern, Pike, or Northern Pike? Slime dog is not an acceptable answer.

I call them Pike Ed, since there is no Southern, Eastern or Western Pike. (Also the S.D. name).

Pike seems to be the most common. You're right Fred, where else are Pike? Maybe west? I do know they are in Alaska. Very NW?

My dad also called them “northerns”, so that’s what I call them, too.

In the early days of Clinton Lake, here in Lawrence, northerns were stocked there, but the water was not
deep/cold enough to sustain them. We caught a bunch of them one spring, once we found out it was necessary to use steel leaders or much heavier line than 6# test. They are a blast to catch on crappie gear!

The Southerns are also referred to as BUBBAS.
Oh Randy you guys cheat.... my local lake the record so far is 38 inch Northern Pike on 6 lb fluorocarbon....as we want to catch trout stocked or walleye or bass or crappie or big minnow eating bluegills. If game to try this challenge then i recommend a rear drag spinning reel and an ugly stick rod that really bends double and never broke one yet.And for those SOFT mouth Flathead catfish you don't need steel leaders anyway....good fishing to you and tight lines to you.
Northerns, or hammer handles (for those under 20”). 😉

We have them out here. They’ve always been Northerns to me.

I have used all three. I go to Northern Pike if the listener is confused. Why don't just use that all the time? Your guess is as good as mine.

How do we know the tooth brush was invented by a redneck (southerner). If a yankee invented it, it would be called a teeth brush!
We always called them Nothern in MN, now my brother calls the small ones Hammer Handles.
