There's one lake I've been having luck with in my area, but I'm still not doing well on the beaches, and have been trying really hard to catch halibut.

I know lakes got beaches. But Halibuts? I think I may see a problem.

Hey Ray….get yourself a 2500/3000 spinning real, load it with 30# braid, 20# flouro leader, a floating Daiwa salt pro lure, 5 to 6 inch, or a floating Yo Zuri lure same size, a 7 or 71/2 foot medium/heavy surf rod, and head to the beach. Lots of California Halibut in Monterey, Carmel, up and down the coast. Watch utube stuff about CaliHali fishing, not to be confused with Pacific Halibut fishing (where you almost always need to get offshore). If the above gear is too spendy, research light tackle hali fishing on utube! I’m now headed to the freezer to thaw out some hali steaks!

Man halibuted is my favorite fish to eat and I cannot catch a single one of them! How far do I need to get out there when I'm casting? Because sometimes it's difficult with a lighter lures especially with heavier fishing line I grew up in the Bay Area catching bath and sturgeon half fresh half salt water but this beach fishing stuff is really difficult for me to understand I got a few strikes here and there using a hair Raiser but that's about it what am I supposed to look for while finding a spot on the beach thank you bro oh by the way, I'm not going fishing just for the hell of it I'm going fishing for the halibut😊

Hey Papa…here is a photo of three of my choice lures. The top lure is a YoZuri Hydro Minnow LC 150F, the second is the same but different pattern, (see YoZuri.com for all models), the third is a Diana Salt Pro Minnow 13F. In some cases I have upgraded the snap rings and trebles hook sizes and substituted single hooks on some. I also am going to experiment with dual hooks (cutting off one hook on a treble). Tight lines!

Hey Ray…see my post to Papa for lure choices. You probably know all the following but bear with me: #1 make sure your rig can handle tossing 5 to 6 inch lures, #2 the floating lures will actually sink about 3 feet and disturb the sandy bottom which attracts the halis which are ambush feeders, #3 you do not need to cast a hundred yards out, just cast out past breakers and begin an erratic retrieve, #4 learn to read the surf and find pockets or holes where fish are (good stuff on utube). Back in the day I spearfished for halis in Monterey Bay and could find them in one foot of water! Go get’em and tight lines.

I use iron ( we call them ) without the diver for Lingcod and Rockfish. They work excellent. They look very similar. I add anise oil for scent. The copper colder is good for ling.
