This is the best approach, although when bottom fishing in the salt water with heavy braided line, such as for halibut, you may end up working quite a while longer, or possibly just cutting as far out as you can by getting right over the top of the snag. Of course working different angles to free your line would be the first order of business, especially when out on a boat.
