Hi. My name is Ron Williams from Everson Wa. I have been reading all your posts for some time. Have intended to start posting for also for some time. The July 15th post about triploid fish finally triggered my decision. The picture in my avitar is a triploid rainbow about 8#. The picture attached is also a triploid rainbow caught by a fellow on the same charter.
Many fishmen may not know about them if they do not target trout. Have patience with those members.
This is a great forum with lots of help and information.

triploid Rainbow is a strain that can't breed.

Triploid is a process where the eggs are treated to produce only sterile fish. That way the energy goes into growth, not reproduction. The state is moving towards using more and more triploid trout in the high lakes to control over reproduction thereby stunting. I stocked some triploids for the state this year. Hopefully they'll survive in this shallow high lake. Some years they survive and others they don't seem to make it.

In normal reproduction, the pairs of chromosomes separate into 2 parts, each containg half a set of chromosomes. The female is treated with a chemical that causes the chromosome to stick together when the cell separates into two parts. The part with the paired chromosomes is then fertilized with the normal speed cells from the male. These fertilized eggs have three half sets of chromosomes, ergo, tri...ploid hatchling. They tend to be much larger than normal fish also.

Thus is a triploid peony. It works for plants too. This flower is a bout 6 inches across. The normal peony is about the size of the center.

Me too. I figure if I'm learning, I'm growing. And, If I'm not growing, well then, you know what that means. So I try to learn something everyday. I knew a tripled trout used it's time and energy growing instead of reproducing, but I never had anyone explain the chromosomes to me. Now I understand it better. Thank you.
