Hello Stepper, welcome to the Stage. I’m sure you will find answers in abundance. There are a whole lot of excellent fisherman and women here. With regards to your questions please be as specific as you can it helps folks know how to answer. I do think you will find it’s like riding a bike, you don’t forget, it will come back to you.
Welcome Stepper, let us know where you plan to fish, what you want to try to catch and what you have to use? We’ll figure out a plan for you.
Do you have a boat, or plan to fish from shore?

50Stepper,
To get your most useful feedback, include things like:
1. shore v. boat
2. target species
3. salt water v. fresh
4. body of water type. Lake, river, stream, other.
5. type gear used...spinning, bait cast or other. Rod length and weight...heavy v. medium heavy v. medium v. light.
Additionally, if you're breaking out some equipment not used in decades, do not skip the maintenance step (at least an internal clean & lube) and full line replacements. Lastly, I recommend, prior to showing up at the water, test your equipment. Put some weight on it and prove it casts and retrieves well.
Hope something in here helps.

Welcome Stepper,
I was raised in the Gary, Glen Park area, a LONG time ago. Went to Riley grade school, Bailey Jr High and did 3 years at Lew Wallace High school.
Moved away at the end of my Jr year, in 1968.

Glad to see your getting back into it.

Howdy neighbor,
I'm in Lafayette.
I retired last February and my greatest pleasure is teaching my grandchildren to fish.
I've fished more this year than the past 40 combined.
One method I like to use when fishing from shore, or even a pier is bobber fishing with no extra weight attached and a small pencil bobber. Use a small size long shanked hook with 1/2 half of a red worm threaded on the hook with the point and barb fully exposed.
As best you can estimate depth to the bottom of the top of a weed line.
Because of the minimal weight you won't be able to cast far. The unweighted line will slowly sink. The small pencil bobber will lie flat on the surface and spring up like a flag when you have a strike.
The grandkids and I have caught fish as small as your thumb to large bass, and everything in-between.
It's exciting to see that little bobber spring up and dive below the surface of the water.
