Recently I’ve read an article that states that fiberglass rods wear out over time and loose there action, and that carbon fiber/graphite rods wear out 3 times slower. I’ve been meaning to pickup a new fly rod but since reading that article, I’ve kind a been wanting to stay away from the fiberglass ones. Have any of you out there ever had any experience with this? And can fishing rods actually wear out?

My favorite Glass Rod is a Winston Fly Rod, an 8' 3wt that I love to Fish in the Fall on the Mreced River. I bought it used in 1985 the Rod was 10 yrs old then. I still Fish it today and it still casts just as well as it did when I first got it.

I understand that , I dont know your skill level. I have taught Fly Casting for over 30 yrs. And I cringe when I see a student show up with a glass rod. Not saying you r a novice. But Glass is a great tool but not as effective a casting tool as Graphite. And that is why I asked why you want Glass?

Fiberglass is moderate action at best, so I’m not sure that it really wears out. My Scott F703 is at least 10 years old and still fine. I also have older Orvis Superfines that while again moderate rods, are still great and have good action. I wouldn’t worry about it. Unless you fish all day every day, you’ll probably never wear out a fiberglass or graphite rod.

Ok thanks, I tend to over think everything so this thread, may just be a byproduct of that.

If you WANT a new fly rod then this one is all worn out! If you aren't really wanting a new rod and this one still catches fish then it's just fine. That's why I have trouble explaining to my wife why I NEED a new rod. ;)

Only cheap models , blank not so much but guides , will fail, wraps may fray and reel seats can fail ! However if not used much should be fine !

These are over 40 +years ago. Bought them when I got out of the Army. I use them all the time. I rewrap them with my hons sewing string and nail polish as you can see.you take care of anything, it will do the same for you!! Just a thought 💭

ANYTHING will wear out in time, but glass will long outlast yours and my lifetime!! Do you dress your rods and clean them before you put them away? Rinsing them off, drying them off, and dressing them with a compound like armorall can extend their life...
