For the flyroders out there, do think that a Martin rod and reel are good enough for the money?, I've got one for 30 bucks .On a fixed income ,that is the best I can afford. You all take care and have a good day of fishing.

Never seen a Martin fly rod, but I remember Martin fly reels from way back!
Sounds like you got a bargain. If it does the job, you have done well. It all depends on what type and size fish, and what demands that puts on the gear.

I actually have a 6w Martin I picked up at a pawn shop. Rod... not bad...reel, eehh. If it came with a decent line, you got a deal. I'm a firm believer in the school of thought that says.."it ain't what you got, it's what you do with it". That sentiment applies to pretty much every aspect of one's life...fishing gear included.

Thanks for what you said "it's not what you got, it's what you do with it ," I fish for crappie, bluegill and smallmouth bass. I have no desire to fish anything larger than those. Take care and Peace be with you.

Welcome to the Forum, 54. Martin offered that combo as a entry level set up when I was a kid 70 years ago. May have been before that time. They were good then, who knows what time has done to it.

I'm new to this Forum and very glad to see questions and responses to fly fishing. I collect items related to fly fishing but my passion has been fly tying. There are no trout waters close to me so I use those same flies used for trout to catch bluegills and bass. One of the most effective is the ant tied very easily with a strip of foam and some hackle to help keep it afloat. Using a 3 / 4 weight rod when a big bluegill slams into it is one of those small thrills you get and the satisfaction that you caught a fish on something you made. Fair winds and tight lines...
