Hi, I'm new to the area, and USA, having moved here about 7 years ago. My girlfriends and I would love to go beach fishing for salmon, just hoping to find some local tips to help us out.
Our area is Anacortes and Whidbey Island, WA.
Thanks, Ruby

High Rudy. I do not do much beach fishing for salmon as I have a boat. I do enjoy watching folks fish from the beach. I did do a fair bit for kings at Fort Warden back in the dark ages. (mid 80's). The pink run is currently active, though this rain will move many up into the Skagit. Many people fish the Fort Casey area near the ferry dock for pinks and silvers off the beach. If it were me, as soon as the Skagit clears up a bit from the rain, I would fish right there in Sedro Wooley next to the boat ramp. If you want a more secluded place, bring a bike or walk the levey to a more private beach. Just drive to the ramp daily and check out the action just down river from the ramp. You will quickly know when it is time to pull out your rod. You can also watch that way and see what the successful people are using. The salmon runs are very seasonal being feast of famine, so if the bite is on, don't wait until tomorrow. Those fish may be 10 miles up river by then.
To extend your beach fishing beyond and before the salmon runs, you can target sole from the beach. They are fun to catch on trout gear and very good eating. They can be caught on most sandy slope beaches.(not low tide uncovered flats like Birch Bay). I have caught them using a fly rod and chest waders (waist deep) off Semiahmoo spit. My choice of tackle for salmon is a small Point Wilson dart with a slight S bend (small pink buzz bomb for pinks). For sole, I use a two hook rig with bait fished on the bottom. Bait of choice is a two inch Gulp Alive sandworm. If no bait, then a 3/8 or 1/2 oz. round head jig with a grub curly tail jigged slowly along the bottom. I like white, my daughter likes green. Please let us know how you do. We love photos.
