Im new to fly fishing and really have no idea of what I’m doing. Could you please identify these flies and tell me how to fish them.
Thanks.
On the left is a black ant. Fish this as a dry fly wherever there is a canopy over a stream, they work in other areas, but then you should fish them close to the bank. Windy days are great.
In the center is a parachute Adams. This is also a dry fly and is a good caddis imitation and also an attractor fly. Fish to risers or as a searching fly. Should be a very productive fly for you.
Lastly is a gold-ribbed hare's ear nymph. This is a wet fly always. As a beginner, you might want to fish this under an indicator or a bushy dry fly.
You've got a good start on a basic collection of trout flies. Good luck out there.
Thanks. If your still there what do you mean by fishing under a bushy fly?
A bushy fly is a dry fly that has enough hackle to keep it floating high in rough water over having a nymph suspended under it. In this case you are using the dry fly as a strike indicator.
I fish barbless, so I tie the nymph to the eye of the dry fly. The usual way of tying to the bend of the hook won't work since the there's no barb to keep the nymph line from sliding off.
I hope you have someone to mentor you as you get into fly fishing. It is so tough to start from scratch.
Thanks against, and btw I don’t have a mentor to help me fly fish. I think I will be fine because I taught myself saltwater and freshwater fishing.
It still wouldn't hurt to take a fly fishing course, and try to meet someone to go fishing with. What state do you live in?
House fly, blow fly and biting fly.
