Reading the post from Doug Lemmon brought back a memory from years gone by.

This happened many, many, many years ago (about 53 or so). I was teaching flying at a little airport in San Juan Capistrano. It was about a 30 minute drive from home. One day I just finished up a lesson and the weather was turning "cranky" as the Kiwi's would say. It started pouring and I mean buckets, so decided to call it a day and head on home down the freeway. It was raining so hard you could barely see 40 feet in front of you, so had to be very careful. I was in the second lane over from the fast lane doing maybe 25 mph. Then it happened, this guy going well over 60 (reminded me of Saw1) swerves into my lane. Don't think he even saw me. I had to swerve to the right to miss him, which put me into a hydroplane spin across the two remaining lanes. Luckily, no other cars there. I hit this little reflector sign as I go down this embankment nose first, again very lucky. It was about an 8 foot drop. I come to complete rest in about a foot of mud.

Now the fun Begins! I look across this field and see a gas station about 200 ft away. It is still coming down in buckets, so decide to just wait for it to stop. I lit up a cigarette and turned on an Eagles song "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and just sat there enjoying the moment. Then I see this CHP officer on a motorcycle stop on the road above me. He comes running down the embankment, slips and goes face first into the mud right next to my window. Reminded me of a John Wayne movie. I couldn"t help myself and started to laugh. He looks up at me, wipes the mud out of his eyes and sees me just sitting there with this grin on my face smoking my cigarette. He then starts yelling at me and ask me why I didn't get out of the car, as that is what I am suppose to do if I am not injured. I explained it was raining really hard, and was going to wait for it to stop and then go over to the gas station and get some help. Needless to say, he was not a happy camper. We get it sorted out, he calls for a tow truck, and I get home safely without a scratch. I still get a good chuckle every time I remember him lookin up at me. I can't make this stuff up folks.....hope you enjoyed the story.

On a side note: He started taking flying lessons from me and we became very good friends.

That's a really good recollection, thanks for sharing. Think Grizz is having a bad memory while reading it too!
