My Nephew and his wife asked me to take them out yesterday for their inaugural trip on my boat. Told them it was the last day for rock fish and the marine forecast looked “nautical”. They were game, took their Dramamine the night before and morning off (she still managed to “chum” the fish after a potty trip below). Headed out at 7:00 am, the bay was a bit choppy, told them we’d poke our nose around the light house (Bonito Point) and make a decision to continue or not. The point was rough but manageable and I had planned to go just past the San Quentin prison and try a new spot. Got there about 8:00 am and started drift fishing, after an hour and a half the seas began to build and the wind shifted, we had 4 in the box (and the theme song to Gillagin’s Island started playing in my head). Told them to pull up we were heading in and I’m glad we didn’t wait any longer. The trip back around the point was the worst seas I’ve had to navigate thus far, I was confident but my nephews wife had him in a death grip! Once around the corner the seas (and she) calmed down and we safely cruised back to port.
Now I know what the boat is capable of and I don't think I’ll test her any further……….
Made a meal of filets for them…….
All smiles heading out…..
Last fish before heading in, notice my stance, wide and leaning against the T-top support

Hi!
We had the same mission - last day of inshore rock - so we headed out early ( 6:00 am) from Sausalito and grabbed some live bait at the receiver for later in the day as Windy showed 5 knots of wind until noon outside and a shift to Northwest from South wind later in the day. .
Went around the corner at Pt Bonita- very chunky seas but was confident it would lay out- went all the way up to Double Point- saw only one party boat ( Out Limits?) and us-
fished for 2 hours and South Wind only came up further- lost a monster ling at the boat and caught only 4 big rock- decided at 10:00 best to head back to the Bay for Halibut- got to the corner at 11:00 and it was absolute mayhem- Mack truck sized waves coming at us in all directions- powered down to about 7 knots and give the corner a WIDE berth and still had a white knuckle trip coming in- went for Halibut in front of the St Francis, got a big one on which came unbuttoned- by 12:30 it was blowing 20-25 on the bay and we limped home to Sausalito.
My Albin 28 was barely able to handle the seas at the corner- lesson for all with smaller boats- avoid the corner at Pt Bonita anytime you get a big South wind with some swells- and an ebb tide would have been monstrous. I had been confident the wind was going to veer around to the Northwest ( according to WINDY) and were were coming in towards the top of the flood when it SHOULD have been relatively manageable or would never have chanced it- but when the South wind came up strong we made a beeline for home and very glad we did.
You mess with the wind (mother nature) and ocean it can get nasty before you know it. Glad ya made it in safely

I had a 25 Wellcraft Sportsman. 1985 model. It would rock and roll in rough water. Even Dramamine would not help.

Gordon, thats what I’ve got, title says 86, hull says 85. Yes, it rock and rolls, but handles the seas pretty well when its snotty out!
What memories are made from.

Mine was a walk around cuddy. Sleep 4. Two burner stove and a toilet. Enjoy that boat.

Thanks Capt, she’s an old girl, but we try to keep her maintained!
