Minnesota Fishing

I would like to hear your thoughts on changing the lines per license holder for MN.

The reason I ask is because I enjoy trolling boards for walleyes unfortunately MN only allows 1 line. Wisconsin allows 3 lines per person.

I ice fish a lot and in Wisconsin they can use 3 lines and us in Minnesota can only use 2 lines. The Wisconsin people fish right next to me and use 3 lines. I asked a game warden, and he told me to write to our senate.

You can use two lines on some border waters; the st Croix and Mississippi (Below ST Anthony Falls, was just changed this year by our senators). I would like at least two allowed all the time myself. Sometimes it is nice to be able to cast about when fishing off of the bottom.

Is it 1 line per boat or angler?

In lakes in Minnesota it is 1 line per person. The Mississippi river is 2 lines per person. Minnesota is 2 lines per person and Wisconin is 3 lines per person. In the winter lakes go to 2 lines per person in Minnesota.

Thanks so much for the quick response! We’ll be at Lake Vermilion and can’t wait to do some leadcore trolling

I hear ya, many a times I would like to put a bobber in and then do some casting. But not in Minnesota. Or run 2 lines while trolling. At least it gives you an option on using a couple different baits at the same time to help see what they are biting on.

Thanks! We trolled with 2 lines of leadcore then switched up and fished for bass and crappie. Any day is a good day at Lake Vermilion!

I'm used to fishing in WI(3 lines) and AZ (2 lines). Its really strange for me that you can only use 1 in MN. Its the 21st century, time MN joins the rest of the country. I like others have mentioned like to have 1 line with live bait and use a second line for casting lures

In Minnesota the rule is one line per angler, unless ice fishing, ( cutting a hole in the frozen ice surface of the lake.) If it was changed to two lines, many guys would be trolling over simply casting.

One lines in summer is just right. Fish smarter than over fishing. Limit is limit not taking more than is legal and trying to get by with it. Its a sport not something that some people without license do because they do not care they got nothing to lose

The fishing has gone from catching fish to eat. To how many fish can a person catch in 4 hours, 8 hours. Never mind that several of the fish released may not survive. Which leads to more waste then want. I know fish under size is one thing, but to catch a 100 fish in a day, while a person may have their limit. I have found 29 inch walleyes floating on lakes after being released. Most floating belly up not able to swim down. To them that claim fizzing is the way to save fish!!! They don't survive, they just don't float up. Sometimes rather than target game fish for the fun fishing look to the panfish, and try doing it with light lines. As catching a 13 inch Rockbass, on 2lb test line in summer months on a ultra light rod, can be a challenge many may find a bigger challenge then just catching fish on 8 or 10 pound test lines.
