Commander, I just had to look this up, I have a ton of Italian-American friends, some going back to the 1950's. Never was exposed to this even at the Bocci Club. Maybe it's because most of these folks have their roots in Sicily. Can't say more here, without giving the answer away.

My grandmother used to make it all the time. It's basically coffee with ice cream. she used to spike it with amaretto or Frangelico.

Sounds like your Grandmother made you a very tasty drink refered to as Afogato.
There are several minor versions, but they all are basically the same.
If you remember how you Grandmother used to make it I would love to try it. How much of each ingredient did she use?
