Went out to Duxbury reef for rockfish (while we still can) and lingcod, then back into SF Bay for a try at halibut. It was me, PapaD and my boat co-owner Karel. We left the marina at about 7:15 and headed to Duxbury and started fishing at about 8:00. The ocean conditions were great, doesn’t get much better and it was warm, peeled down to T-shirts right away. The bite was hit and miss but we managed to boat a number of king fish (to use as crab bait later this year) rock fish, a barely legal ling cod and 1 flounder. Then we motored into the bay (on the way saw a huge red tide, sad to see) to try our luck at halibut. On the way out on the morning there were a lot of boats fishing by Alcatraz so we tried there. Not much action at all, but did manage to hook up and land 1 nice one about 25”.
That was it except to say that PapaD (Doug) was great to be fishing with. He knows his way around a boat and fishing tackle and as I’ve experienced with all Stagers, a scholar and gentleman!! He’ll be invited back!
Doug and Karel with the days “smorgasbord” (all carcasses kept for crab bait too!)
Back side of Alcatraz

It was a fantastic day. Great people, great weather and sea conditions. I would have been happy even if I hadn't brought home a big bag of fillets.
The only thing I can complain about is that I fished on the wrong side of the boat because 40grit caught all of the big fish off the starboard side.

Well PapaD, John 21:6 Jesus tells them to "throw your nets on the right side of the boat"
So there you have it.
I always thought he meant the correct side. If he'd said 'starboard', I wouldn't have been confused.
Now I know.
I'm not sure if it will help to switch sides though -- Denny will just steer the boat so that all the fish are on his side anyway 😃🤔😭

Nice variety there guys. What was the red tide from? Also, is that a tour boat at the back of the island?

Sounds like a great day of fishing! When you were headed in where abouts did you see the red tide.

The red tide (an algae) is from the unusually warm water (lack of cold water upwelling), it causes domoic acid build up in shellfish and harmful to anything that eats them. So, this fall before they open up the crab season they check the levels in the crab, if too high then no crab season or best case is a delayed season…………..
Yes on the tour boat, they come and go frequently shuttling tourists for tours of the island.

When we were on our way back in from Duxbury reef it was off shore NW of the lighthouse. It was a large area, took us a few minutes to get through and past it.
Can’t really see the ocean color change in the pic, but it was very evident to the naked eye. If you’re familiar with the coast line you might recognize the area. We had already been motoring through it for a few minutes, but it continued on and between us and the shore beyond where this pic was taken.
